Growth

Photography

Picture
Hailey was given the word growth to inspire a photograph.  She used a milk bath and various plants to capture the essence of this word. The emerging face from the water captures the fact that growth is an action, and the milk bath itself helps the eye to catch all of the colors and shapes that are part of the action of growing.

Hailey H.

Music

Upon seeing the photo, our initial impression was the word transcendence.  The imagery of the person floating in complete stillness spoke to us.  It appeared as if the person was changing from one form of life into the next without resistance.  While creating our piece, "Ocean's Whisper," we attempted to capture the melancholy mood of the photo while preserving a sense of tranquility.  To achieve this, we use minimalistic compositional technique by selected an ocean drum to craft a sound that the audience could visualize.  The piano represents the changing tides of the ocean while the vocals represent the ocean's whispers.  More and more harmonies enter as the wave grows in size and the piece ends with a piano solo that represents the crashing of an ocean wave. The piece fades into silence like a wave retreating into the ocean. The lyrics may be shrouded in ambiguity, but one thing is certain, the tide will surely sing again.

Drawing and Painting

Picture
When we first listened to Strand 3, we envisioned an eerie landscape with two singers engaged in a lonely duet. Through feelings of melancholy, fear, and loneliness, we focused on portraying these emotions in our piece through color and composition. Our landscape, created using torn pieces of paper, evolves into an array of colors, with warm colors placed on one side, and cool colors located on the other. A darkly painted mountain range of overlapping triangular shapes dominate the middle ground and helps separate the sea from the sky. The landscape has been vertically torn in half and then loosely strung together like a bound book. This is suppose to symbolize how even though the two singers are physically connected together, there is an emotional distance between them too. These feelings and emotions were our intent when we sent our artwork to the next group.

Dance

When we initially saw the art piece, we thought of a journey of separation between two characters. We were very interested in the difference between the sea and the sky with the middle land being black. Our color spectrum shows the journey of these two characters as they drift further from each other. Our characters continue to find their own path, but end up hurting each other with their grief.  We are both seniors and will most likely not be going to the same college in the fall, so we used are reality in tandem with the artwork to create this piece.

Theatre

When we saw the dance, the first thing we noticed was the close bond between the characters and the fracturing of that relationship as the dance went on. We decided to convey this in our scene by showing a relationship between two friends that grows more distant as another has found a boy. The two characters have always been close and shared everything, but now a new relationship threatens their own.
