Family
Photography
As the starting point for our project, I was the only one that knew the overall concept. I received the word, “Family” to create a photograph. I immediately began thinking of my own definition of family: Acceptance, Love, Togetherness. In sending the photo to the next group, I wanted to portray the sense of candid joyous emotions experienced with those individuals each of us accept as our family.

Music
When we were presented the photograph we decided not to limit family to words but to artistically incorporate it into a song. When words fail, music prevails. We saw unity and bonding in the picture and used harmonics in our music to describe that.

Drawing and Painting
When we listened to the music for Strand 5, we immediately thought of a Gregorian Chant. Envisioning vibrant colors, intricate designs and patterns, much like the large scale stained glass windows that help illuminate the interior of Gothic Cathedrals. We used the idea of the symmetrical design of a rose window as the focal point of the piece and surrounded the design with intricate patterns of small architectural details. Bright colors were added throughout the artwork to make it appear illuminated and add visual interest and movement. When we sent the artwork to the next group the intent was for the viewer to feel a spiritual connection through a harmonious balance of color, line and shape.

Dance
When we received the drawing, we thought that it resembled the stained glass windows of a church. We wanted our dance to give prominence to the art of the stained glass windows that we saw in the artwork and to express the delicacy and beauty of them. We then used the spirituality of the stained glass windows of a church to form a story line. Based on the idea that spirituality is essentially based on hope of another place, we hoped that our dance would express a story about someone's longing to go somewhere and feeling of desperation for a change. We hoped that our piece would reflect both the culture and beauty that comes with the art of stained glass windows and the internal battle of trying to get somewhere despite the hardships of getting there, eventually arriving, and reflecting on what the journey was like.

Theatre
When we were first given this piece we immediately saw family, but we didn’t see a positive representation. We perceived it as showing the negative aspects of one. All of us helped coordinate our thoughts into the planning a writing of the script that was written by the actor playing in this scene Sarah. T - Our scene takes place in the lower middle class area of Detroit and revolves around two sisters in an argument about the uncertainty of the future.
