Acceptance

Photography

Picture
My work depicts the concept of acceptance. In my work I portray that concept through the setting and props used in my piece. The subject is sitting on the steps of a church which has a deep connection to the girl. When she was younger she lost her father and it just so happens that this is the church that they held his service in; to her this is where she accepted the situation and that loss. The meaning of my given word is also conveyed through the flower. The hydrangeas themselves represent understanding while the color of the flowers, the blue, represents acceptance within itself.
~Madison B.

Music

When we first saw the photograph we immediately noticed the bright blue flowers that the mournful girl was holding. We took it as a sign of hope during dark times, especially since the background was black and white, and slightly blurry. Her downward-cast eyes and her glum expression created a melancholy mood that suggested she had been through a difficult situation. We thought there was a bit of a duality between the murky and depressing image of the girl and the happier and clearer and more colorful flowers she was holding. To highlight this, the main melody of the piece starts off sad but has a brighter ending, the melody circles around in repetition, gaining an atmosphere as it goes along (“atmosphere” was a significant take away from the picture as well) with more and more synth layers making the song feel more open and airy. The “B” section is simply a break from the A section, We thought a more minimalist approach to the atmosphere would be a nice contrast to the maximalist A section. The A section returns in a more minimalist form, incorporating elements of both the first A section and the B section, and then ends the piece out.

Drawing and Painting

Picture
When I listened to the music for Strand 1, I immediately felt a sense of nostalgia. The song made me feel relaxed and calm and I could picture a dark, drizzly cityscape at night with reflections of water droplets on the windows and streets. This sense of a misty-like atmosphere influenced my color choices, with emphasis being placed on the hazy pinks of the antenna lights that reflect on the buildings and streets The majority of the image is painted using watercolors of cool blues and grays, which help emulate the calm stillness I initially felt when I first listened to the song. In addition to my choice of color, I also created an optical illusion within my artwork by incorporating three different perspectives. I want the viewers eyes to easily move around the composition and not be distracted by dominating shapes or colors. When I sent this artwork on to the next group I intended for them to feel a sense of nostalgia by visualizing themselves looking out of a rain spotted window and onto a view of a city that perhaps one day they had visited.

Dance

We were tasked with creating our dance based on the painting above. In the painting, we interpreted the faded city as a search for something, whether it be searching for a way out or searching for an escape from emotion. We derived our emotions from the red and blue splashes of color seen in the painting, and we interpreted them as an overall loneliness of the piece. We used the song Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khalid because the song talks about escaping loneliness as well as escaping hardships.
